Meeting notes:
- Organisational changes (Techatrix):
- Problems:
- ZLS lacks recurring contributors
- Lots of drive-by (i.e. one-time) contributions
- Could be better community engagement to improve contributor retention?
- Pipeline currently not very supportive:
- Little/no discussion or feedback on issues
- Same for PRs, often going stale
- Contributors could/should be involved in the community, beyond just sending contributions on GitHub
- Recent issues with AI PRs spamming the repo and wasting maintainers’ time
- ZLS lacks recurring contributors
- Changes:
- Monthly meetings, to help involve users and potential contributors
- Will help with understanding people’s experience and problems both with use and contributing
- Better co-ordinate work between maintainers & contributors
- Banned LLM contributions
- Closed 2/3 of PRs, most of low quality
- Aiming to encourage committed & consistent contributors who are part of the community
- Created a contribution guide, including how to build & test ZLS.
- (Ongoing) Cleaning up issue tracker:
- Closing stale issues
- Tagging contributor-friendly issues
- Clarifying where and how new work should be done
- Monthly meetings, to help involve users and potential contributors
- Future ideas:
- Invite-only pull requests?
- Perhaps require people involve themselves with the community before allowing?
- Could be that we encourage engagement in the Discord and/or with the monthly meetings before making a contribution.
- Reaching out directly to people to discuss getting people involved.
- One-on-one assistance / meetings between maintainers and contributors.
- Issue tracker:
- Many issues are unclear as to how they could be addressed
- Lack of prioritisation of issues
- No knowledge of which issues are being currently worked on - risks duplicating effort or discouraging contribution
- Gather feedback on how these changes progress during future meetings
- mattnite: could have a role for someone to help mediate issues? Not to directly contribute, but to help reproduce and clarify issues, making them better targets for contributors.
- jeffective: could mark ‘contributor-friendly’ issues as “will be shepherded by a maintainer”
- Techatrix: may be resource-limited… we can get an equivalent through monthly meetings or helping one-on-one as requested.
- rcalixte: suggests that clearly delineating first-time contributor-friendly, vs requiring existing knowledge of the codebase.
- Techatrix: currently, ‘beginner-friendly’ marks an issue which should be able to be solved without existing knowledge using just what is present in the repo. a separate ‘contributor-friendly’ tag could indicate something still solvable, but could require more codebase knowledege or collaboration.
- Invite-only pull requests?
- Problems:
- Workspace symbols (Auguste):
- You can search an entire project for a symbol name.
- Since 0.16, you can search for any symbol, basically grep but specific to symbol names.
- Entire project gets parsed and indexed on startup
- Sliding window trigrams parsed. For example Shr_Imp -> “shr”, “hri”, “rim”, “imp”
- Each trigram put into cuckoo filter for querying.
- High performance: for Zig compiler first load is 400ms, trigrams load in 180ms, and symbol search takes 20ms.
- Zig build system changes (Techatrix):
- Build system has been split into a configure and make stage.
- Build script generates a build graph, which is then executed by the maker.
- No longer have a singular build runner, making ZLS unusable.
- Discussion with Andrew on how to fix ZLS’s usecase.
- Some issues unregressed:
- Build-on-save fixed.
- But regressions remain after 0.17 was tagged, long list of unfixable (for ZLS) issues.
- Will have to wait for next release cycle to resolve these.
- Idea of creating an architecture documentation to help initial contributors.
- Friction with Zig, ZLS can’t keep up when Zig keeps making breaking changes, and not addressing them before a release is tagged. Closer collaboration with core team would be really valuable.
- Resilient parsing is a current point of development, would address the issue of incomplete buffers breaking completions.
